When can a pastor opt out of Social Security?

Ministers cannot opt out of Social Security because they think it’s a bad investment. When filing Form 4361, a minister makes some representations under penalty of perjury. A minister must certify opposition on the basis of religious principles to acceptance of public insurance.

Is Social Security contribution mandatory?

Nearly every American worker — as well as their employer — is required to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, including the self-employed. If you don’t pay into the system when you work, then you can’t collect the income benefits later in life.

Can I opt out of Social Security?
