How do you document foreign income?

Generally, you report your foreign income where you normally report your U.S. income on your tax return. Earned income (wages) is reported on line 7 of Form 1040; interest and dividend income is reported on Schedule B; income from rental properties is reported on Schedule E, etc.

Who must file IRS Form 1116?

If the foreign tax paid is more than $300 ($600 for Married Filing Jointly) or they do not meet the other conditions to make the election to claim the foreign tax credit without filing Form 1116, taxpayers must file Form 1116 to claim the foreign tax credit.

Forms to File You must file Form 1040, US Individual Income Tax Return or Form 1040 SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors. If you have a qualifying child, you must also file the Schedule EIC (Form 1040 or 1040-SR), Earned Income Credit to give us information about them.

What do you need to know about earned income tax?

Your tax year investment income must be $3,650 or less for the year, and you must not file form 2555, Foreign Earned Income or form 2555-EZ, Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. You must have at least $1 in earned income (yes, that means that a self-employed person who claims a loss won’t qualify).
