Is Pell Grant awarded per semester?

For the 2019–20 academic year, individual students can receive a maximum of $6,195. Pell Grants are disbursed per semester if your school uses the semester system. Like the Pell Grant, this award is split per semester. For example, if you receive $300 for the year, you will get $150 per semester.

Does taking a semester off affect Pell Grant?

Taking a semester off does not affect your Pell Grants for the rest of the school year. Therefore, if you are enrolled full-time next semester, you will get half of the annual Pell Grant award that you were eligible for.

Will I lose my fafsa if I take a semester off?

If you take a semester off, it shouldn’t make much of a difference for your federal loans. Most federal loans have a six-month grace period. When you return to school at least half-time after taking a semester off, the grace period on your loans will reset, provided you didn’t exceed it.

Do you lose financial aid if you skip a semester?

You don’t automatically receive financial aid again when you re-enroll in college after a semester off. You have to reapply as part of the re-enrollment process. Your award will be based on your new financial aid application, not the old one.

Because the information entered into the FAFSA may change year to year, a student’s EFC may change, leading to different Pell Grant award amounts. Other financial aid a student may qualify for will not impact his or her Pell Grant award.

When was the Pell grant program first created?

Created in 1972, the federal Pell Grant program has been awarding grants to students since the 1973-1974 school year. It was named after Sen. Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island, the chief sponsor of the program.
