Can I intern at my own company?

By Ethan Hayes

As a matter of pure semantics, I think the answer is that you cannot logically intern at your own company, in the sense that being a founder, owner, and regular employee (let alone CEO or some other high-level function which presumably you have) of a company is a distinct status from that of an intern.

Can recent graduates be interns?

You can still do an internship even though you’ve already graduated. If you’ve graduated or are about to and are struggling to find a job, a postgraduation internship is an option to explore right now. Don’t be put off by the myth that internships are for current students only.

Do you legally have to pay interns?

The principal legal issue with internships is whether the organization must pay the intern. For private-sector employers in the United States, the answer is almost always yes. Generally, the intern should be paid at least minimum wage as well as overtime.

Does it matter what company you intern for?

The short answer is, no. The internship you take should resemble (even tangentially) what you are studying in school. Not only is this going to help you actually get the internship, but this also increases your chances of securing a job after graduation in your chosen field.

At what point are you no longer a recent graduate?

Most companies will no longer consider you a “recent graduate” when you have ~2+ years of experience. Some of that experience can sometimes come in school, so it’s not merely a function how long has it been since you graduated.

Should I intern in small company?

Small companies are less likely to have formal internship programs but offer more access to senior leadership and more opportunities to engage on other kinds of projects. Because the company is smaller it’s easier to get exposure to all the areas of the business.

What is classified as a recent graduate?

A “recent graduate” is defined as “a graduate who left full-time education within five years of the survey date”.

Is 30 too old for an internship?

Although you’re never too old for an internship, you’ll have to overcome the stigma of hiring managers to get one. Recruiters are often looking for fresh young talent that they can mold into tomorrow’s leaders—while paying them little to nothing.

How do I ask for an unpaid job?

Begin by introducing yourself and say that you’re seeking an internship. Provide a brief synopsis of your resume and explain why you want to work for the company you’re applying to. Explain how you think an internship would benefit you and further your career, and what you can offer in return.
