Prior year returns can only be filed electronically by registered tax preparers, and only when the Modernized e-File System is available. The IRS posts the status of the Modernized e-File (MeF) system on the MeF Status Page. Individuals filing their own prior year return must print/mail the return.

Can I file a tax return from last year?

You cannot process a prior year return using IRS Free File. Prior year returns can only be filed electronically by registered tax preparers for the two previous tax years. The IRS does not allow electronic filing for prior year returns through self-preparation websites.

What are the responsibilities of a tax preparer?

If the client hired the tax preparer to prepare last year’s taxes, the preparer might also examine the prior year’s tax forms and question any changes. To complete an income tax return, the tax preparer must collect and discuss the client’s current year financial information.

Can a tax preparer file a tax return for free?

Most tax preparers will file a client’s income tax returns electronically. If the preparer does not use software to prepare the tax returns, the IRS offers a free service to file them.

What happens if a tax preparer fails to file?

Also, include any penalties or interest amounts you were charged as a result of the preparer’s negligence. Penalties and interest are assessed on unpaid tax when a return is filed late or the tax owed is paid late. Thus, if your tax preparer fails to file your return and you end up filing late, you will be penalized.

Where can I get a prior year tax return?

Those who need a copy of their tax return should check with their software provider or tax preparer first, as prior-year tax returns are available from the IRS for a fee. Taxpayers who cannot get a copy of a prior-year return may order a tax transcript from the IRS. A transcript summarizes return information and includes AGI.
